a focus on public higher education,
healthcare, housing & tax justice |
The PSC embraces
the struggle for social justice worldwide. We strive to make a
significant contribution to as many campaigns as we can. But we
focus our efforts where they reinforce our primary goals of
strengthening public higher education, defending the City University
of New York, and protecting the professional and working lives of
our members. Right now, the solidarity work of the PSC concentrates
on the following campaigns:

Maintaining Budgets and Rolling
Back Tuition Hikes in Public Higher Education
Education provides the fuel that
drives the engine of our future. Affordable (properly free)
access to college training is essential to meaningful employment. A
trained workforce is critical to economic development and job growth.
The richer and more fulfilling life that higher education makes
possible ought to be a birthright of every New Yorker. But such a life
cannot be built on the backs of students. Since the imposition of
tuition in 1975, public higher education has degenerated from
something publicly financed to something publicly subsidized,
with an increasing share of the burden borne by the students
themselves, those least able to pay. We reject the notion that the
maintenance of our institutions and our jobs must be paid for by
taxing students. We join with other unions, students, community, and
public interest groups to fight proposed cutbacks in funding for
public higher education and to roll back proposed tuition increases.

Establishing Tax Justice
We cannot sustain a livable city
on corporate welfare, service cuts, fee hikes and regressive taxation.
To maintain public higher education and all essential public services
we require additional tax revenues targeted to the wealthiest
individuals and businesses.
Massive tax cuts over the past
decade have created the present budget deficits and undermined the
fairness of the tax structure. We join with those who want to revise
and restructure business taxes and close corporate tax loopholes,
restore the commuter tax, reinstate the stock transfer tax repeal or
defer tax cuts enacted but not yet implemented, and increase income
taxes on individuals earning over $250,000.

Ending the Shortage of
Affordable Housing
Little new construction and the
deterioration of existing housing stock have led to a cumulative
housing shortage and unbearably high rents. Either you move from the
city or your wage gains at the table go straight to your landlord. The
Mayor declares affordable housing an urgent priority. We join with
labor, advocacy and housing groups to press for active government
participation that combines innovative thinking with well-established
methods and resources that have historical and political precedents.

Rekindling Health Care Reform
Health care costs are out of
control and care itself beyond the reach of an increasing number. We
join with the active and the retired, labor and community groups in
building a unified campaign to defend Medicare and Medicaid, create
single-payer national health insurance, guarantee affordable
prescription drugs, and integrate health care delivery with social
services, a safe food and water supply and protection of the
environment.
