Forum: In Defense of the Social Safety Net

Event Date:
October 25, 2011 - 6:00pm - 8:30pm

SafetyNetForum102511_1.jpgKeynote Speaker: Dean Baker, co-director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research.

A distinguished panel includes James Parrott (Fiscal Policy Institute), Kim Phillips-Fein (NYU) and Frances Fox-Piven (Graduate Center).

The situation is urgent. Safety net programs are in peril. In November, the congressional super committee will announce draconian cuts. In New York, the governor and the mayor blame government austerity policies on the pensions and health benefits of public employees. And at CUNY, adjunct health care is threatened.

Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, employee health benefits, public sector pensions and other safety net programs are all targets of this attack. Trade unionists and working people won these benefits – and we must fight to keep them!

The time for push back is now. Join us for an evening of information, discussion and action.
