Labor Goes to the Movies - Paths of Glory (1957, USA, Stanley Kubrick),  Friday, May 9, 6 pm, PSC, 61 Broadway, 16th floor.

Before taking on nuclear war in Dr. Strangelove, Stanley Kubrick made this bitter film about the extraordinary carnage of the First World War. After a suicidal French attack, senior officers scapegoat three innocent soldiers for its failure and seek their execution. Kirk Douglas plays a loyal officer who defends his men, and Adolph Menjou, who showed little bravery during the Hollywood purges and blacklists, icily incarnates the High Command’s cynical indifference to its own soldiers. Paths of Glory was banned in France until 1975, and in Spain under Franco, because of its anti-military message.
