Columnist Jack Newfield wrote in the New York Sun: “This was the week the union establishment became a labor movement again.”  

The week of June 7, 2004 saw strikes by home health aides and day-care workers, highlighted by a 25,000-person rally. Then 60,000 union members including teachers, firefighters, police and PSC members rallied at City Hall to demand good contracts from the City.
